Veszprém County President’s visit to East Sussex

8 - 13 May 2001

Veszprém Megye (county) covers a large region to the north of Lake Balaton, the largest freshwater lake in central Europe.   The area includes the Bakony Hills, which still survive largely unspoiled by modern development, and a beautiful place for long walks.  The shoreline of the lake includes Balatonfüred, a spa town with a long history, and several other smaller waterside towns and villages.  The Tihany peninsular juts southwards into the lake and provides the only car ferry link between the north and the south shores.  The Bakony foothills, and the Tihany peninsular are extensively covered with vineyards.

Links with the county of Veszprém in Hungary have continued to develop at professional level. You can see the Accord between the counties of East Sussex and Veszprém signed in 1996, coinciding with the international celebration of the 1100th anniversary of the founding of the Hungarian nation. The then President of Veszprém Megye (county), Dr Gábor Zongor, subsequently moved on to become a Member of Parliament and then Secretary-General of one of the largest Hungarian unions. His elected successor as President of Veszprém Megye is Csaba Kuti, who was invited jointly by Lewes Links and East Sussex County Council to renew the link between the two counties by a visit here in May 2001.

The delegation from Veszprém was in East Sussex from 8 to 13 May, coinciding with the celebration of Europe Day on  9 May, when a renewed Accord between the two counties was signed.  In a busy professional schedule there were three main topics on which the Veszprém delegation was briefed, and potential future cooperation on common issues was discussed:

đ sustainable tourism
đ the development of social services
đ political cooperation in joint projects attracting European Commission funding

The topics gave several opportunities for visits to a variety of places in East Sussex, including Uplands Community College in Wadhurst, Rye Nature Reserve, Battle Abbey and the Senlac Hill battlefield site. During the week there were also visits in London to the Hungarian Embassy, the European Commission office and the Houses of Parliament at Westminster.

At the weekend our visitors were shown several other parts of Sussex, including new developments in the port of Newhaven, the village of Rottingdean and a glimpse of the Brighton Festival.  The Europe Team of the Brighton & Hove City Council joined the group for a briefing about the city, followed by a tour of the Royal Pavilion. On the Saturday evening Lewes Links hosted a supper reception, where our guests were welcomed by singing and music from children of Western Road primary school.  A short tour on Sunday included the Seven Sisters Country park and a farewell lunch in Alfriston.
