July 2007

Dear members,

The get together on Sunday 24 June at the King’s Head was attended by about 30 members and friends. Thank you to Krisztina Fürendi for entertaining us so magnificently on the zither.    It was good to see so many new faces of all ages!

As a result of this meeting it has been decided that there will be regular meetings alternating Wednesday evenings and Sundays. Over the next few weeks the dates and venues are as follows

all at the Royal Oak, Station Street, Lewes (upstairs function room):

Sunday 22nd July from 3 pm to early evening
Wednesday 1st August at 7.30 pm
Sunday 19th August from 3 pm
Wednesday 5th September at 7.30 pm

These meetings will take the form of informal get-togethers. However, we would like members to contribute by bringing along traditional musical instruments, or singing, as well as any Hungarian cultural artefacts or specialist knowledge of crafts or a cultural nature. Please let us know what you can offer so that we can spread things out more easily. Sam is offering to give a short talk on Hungarian wine on 22nd July.

As well as this, we have booked the Paddock recreation ground -in the centre of Lewes – entrance at The Avenue/White Hill/Offham Road (A2029) junction for Sunday 2nd September from 3 pm. This is an opportunity to bring along some food to cook - bogrács style. We will have barbecue facilities available. For those not familiar with this method, it involves a wok type pan and stir fry meat and vegetables with a lot of wood smoke. People will be encouraged to mix ingredients and try each other’s version of their creations! Please bring all your own utensils and drink. Conventional barbecue food also welcome. If the weather is really poor (as it was on Sunday 24 June) we will de-camp to the Royal Oak. We will also have an entertainment licence so that anyone who wishes to play for us can do so. There will be a small charge of about £3 to cover this and the hire of the ground. There will be no charge for children. There is a children’s playground on the site. Toilet facilities available.

Parking on a Sunday in Lewes is much easier and cheaper than at other times. The nearest public car park to the Paddock is the Needlemakers’ car park in West Street. You could unload anything heavy by temporarily parking at the bottom of The Avenue.

We look forwards to meeting as many of you as possible. Non-members welcome.
